The main difference between machine vision and computer vision is the level of intelligence and autonomy exhibited by the systems. Machine vision is a more limited form of visual processing that is traditionally used in industrial automation and is typically based on rules-based tools. Computer vision is a significantly more sophisticated and complex form of visual processing that is based on deep-learning and used in a wide range of applications to enable computers to "see" the world like humans do.

Machine vision systems can recognize basic parts or feature presence/absence. Computer vision systems, on the other hand, can identify and classify things about visual data in a much more advanced way by using deep-learning techniques to identify objects, recognize patterns, and make predictions based on visual data. Computer vision also provides analytics on the defect classifications. This makes computer vision systems much more versatile and adaptable than their machine vision counterparts. For example, machine vision can tell you if a hole is present or absent, but computer vision will classify weld defects (spatter, porosity, burn through, etc.) and precisely locate those defects.
