SMI, Terra Carta, and Astra Carta: Paving the Path to Sustainability

Jeff Zeller | March 17th, 2025

From March 10-11, 2025, the halls of London’s Hampton Court Palace held a gathering of over 400 CEOs, government leaders, and innovators. They convened for the Terra Carta Roundtables & Exhibition, a summit marking the five-year anniversary of the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), established by His Majesty King Charles III, then Prince of Wales.
The Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI) was founded with a vision to place Nature, People, and Planet at the core of global value creation. Central to this mission is the Terra Carta, a ten-year mandate serving as a practical roadmap for the private sector to contribute to the world’s 2030 targets for sustainability. Drawing inspiration from the historic Magna Carta, the Terra Carta seeks to reunite people and the planet by giving fundamental rights and value to Nature. Complementing this is the Astra Carta, which ensures that humanity’s journey to the stars has sustainability at its core, emphasizing responsible exploration and utilization of space resources.
Celebrating Five Years of Sustainable Progress
The summit celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Terra Carta and showcased the trillions of dollars the private sector has invested in sustainable initiatives over the past five years. It included over 400 CEOs, 25 exhibits showcasing groundbreaking innovations, 19 roundtable discussions focused on delivering system-level change, and 16 plenaries exploring the business opportunity ahead, building on the trillions of dollars invested since 2020.
Some notable attendees included:
Jessica Sibley, CEO of Time, moderated panels featuring global CEOs and government officials who discussed the economic case for sustainable solutions.
Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest is the founder of Fortescue. Fortescue showcased its cutting-edge ammonia-powered vessel, the Green Pioneer, emphasizing the urgent need for alternative fuel sources to mitigate the environmental impact of maritime transport.
British astronaut Tim Peake was also in attendance, bringing his expertise in space exploration and sustainability.
Former BP CEO Bernard Looney was another key figure at the event, engaging in high-level discussions on the role of the energy sector in the transition to a sustainable future.
One of the most impactful parts of the event was the nineteen roundtable discussions. Each discussion focused on mobilizing the necessary resources to deliver systemic change across various sectors and regions, reinforcing the economic case for a sustainable future.
Matroid’s Commitment to Sustainability
Matroid was a key participant in various roundtables on how AI can transform an organization’s sustainability practices. As a leader in computer vision and artificial intelligence, Matroid has consistently contributed to sustainability initiatives by leveraging AI to optimize resource use, reduce waste, and enhance environmental monitoring.
Matroid’s ongoing commitment to sustainable innovation has been highlighted through various global forums, including the Global Investor Forum, CHOGM 2024, and ENACT Majlis 2024, where Matroid engaged world leaders in dialogue about using AI to address pressing environmental concerns. Matroid’s leadership in sustainability was also recognized during meetings with Pope Francis, who emphasized the ethical considerations of AI in global development. Matroid has also driven innovation in airport operations and aerospace sustainability, which underscores its contributions to ensuring a sustainable future in both terrestrial and space environments.
Reza Zadeh, the CEO/founder of Matroid, was integral to discussions on how AI can enhance the energy sector’s ability to lead in sustainability. In discussions with Bernard Looney, he highlighted the transformative role AI and computer vision play in optimizing energy consumption, improving efficiency, and reducing waste. As industries look to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources, AI-driven insights are becoming essential for managing power grids, predicting energy demand, and minimizing environmental impact.
By continuously engaging with world leaders and stakeholders, Matroid remains a key player in aligning AI-driven innovations with the principles of both the Terra and Astra Cartas, reaffirming its role in shaping a sustainable future.
A Dialogue on Managing Space Traffic
A highlight of the event was a roundtable discussion featuring Reza Zadeh, founder of Matroid, and British astronaut Tim Peake. The duo delved into the challenges of sustainability beyond Earth, particularly in managing space traffic. They emphasized the role of Computer Vision and AI in monitoring satellite activity, preventing collisions, and ensuring responsible space exploration. The conversation reinforced the broader theme of sustainability by drawing parallels between preserving the planet and maintaining the integrity of our space environment.
The Terra Carta Roundtables & Exhibition served as a testament to the collective efforts of global leaders, innovators, and organizations like Matroid, all striving towards a sustainable future both on Earth and beyond.
